In early August the Library will begin some long overdue exterior maintenance work:
- Removal and abatement of lead paint
- Repair and re-painting of all exterior non-brick surfaces
- Removal and replacement of windows on the main level of the library, including the two bay windows on the south and west sides of the building
- Tuck pointing and masonry repair of all brick on the building exterior
- Replacement of emergency exit doors in the Baxter Auditorium
How long will this work take?
This maintenance work is expected to last approximately 2–3 months, weather permitting.
Will the Library have to close?
At this point, we do not anticipate that there will be any closure of the entire Library. However, there may be points throughout the process that one of the entrances into the building will be blocked. The Youth Services patio will be closed to the public for the duration of the exterior maintenance work.
What about parking?
There will be some impact on parking directly adjacent to the building throughout the entirety of the process. However, this will change depending on the exact work being performed and will change frequently. Only a small number of spaces in the St. Martha’s lot directly to the north of the Library will be lost due to staging and storage of construction materials/equipment. Spaces that are not available for parking will be clearly fenced off.
Will any events or other services be affected?
We anticipate that we will be able to provide all the events and services to you that we would normally do at this time of year. If any event locations have to change, you will be notified. We will make every effort to minimize disruptions to service. However, due to the nature of the maintenance work, there will be additional noise while work is being performed, particularly during the window removal and replacement.
Updates and questions?
Once the exterior maintenance work begins, we will provide regular updates via the Library website, our weekly e-newsletter, and our social media channels.
